About Kent

Kent is located in the heart of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area, split by a large natural valley and anchored by nearby Mt. Rainier. The city has a variety of parks and recreational facilities, and has been recognized for its innovative parks and recreation program. In addition to hundreds of sports-related programs, the city offers many diverse community activities.

The History of Kent

Kent was once known as Titusville, named after one of the earliest European settlers to arrive in the area. In 1890, it became officially incorporated as the city of Kent. For many decades during and after the Great Depression, Kent was referred to as the "Lettuce Capital of the World," thanks to the generous crops produced by its fertile soil. However, most of that soil was lost with the extensive development that took place in the 1960s and '70s, and the city's economy shifted from farming to technology and aerospace. Today, many well-known companies and corporations have facilities or headquarters in Kent, including Boeing, Whirlpool and REI.

Living in Kent

Kent is home to a variety of diverse neighborhoods and a steadily growing population. Jobs in the city include both white-collar and blue-collar jobs, with many people working in office and administrative support, sales, and management. Kent has an unemployment rate that's considerably lower than the national average, and its job growth has continued to follow an upward trend. If you're looking for a job in the city, the most common industries are manufacturing, retail, construction and transportation.

Kent offers a small-town sense of community combined with convenient access to shopping, dining and the nearby city of Seattle. The town hosts regular farmers' markets and special events, including Kent Cornucopia Days, a family-friendly street fair that takes place every July.
