The History of Kent

Kent was once known as Titusville, named after one of the earliest European settlers to arrive in the area. In 1890, it became officially incorporated as the city of Kent. For many decades during and after the Great Depression, Kent was referred to as the "Lettuce Capital of the World," thanks to the generous crops produced by its fertile soil. However, most of that soil was lost with the extensive development that took place in the 1960s and '70s, and the city's economy shifted from farming to technology and aerospace. Today, many well-known companies and corporations have facilities or headquarters in Kent, including Boeing, Whirlpool and REI.
