The History of Virginia Beach

The Chesepian tribe first inhabited the Virginia Beach area, and it eventually became the first landing spot for Europeans, in 1607. However, it wasn't empty for long, as more English settlers, led by Adam Thoroughgood, arrived in 1629.

When the rail-road reached the coast in 1883, Virginia Beach became a destination for wealthy tourists. It was declared an independent city in 1952 and has been growing ever since.
