The History of Kennedale

The land where Kennedale is now located was once home to Native American tribes that lived along Village Creek. European settlers began moving to the area in 1843, shortly after the tribes signed a treaty with the Republic of Texas. The town officially took its name in honor of Oliver S. Kennedy, a local landowner, in 1886.

Since the town of Kennedale needed to attract a railroad line to improve its commercial and industrial opportunities, it donated a large portion of land to the Fort Worth and New Orleans Railway Co. The company eventually built a line that connected Kennedale to Waxahachie, Texas. Despite the railroad's construction, Kennedale maintained a predominantly rural lifestyle until the 1960s. Many homes didn't have electricity or water lines until the 1950s. That has changed significantly over the past couple of decades, and today Kennedale is a rapidly expanding town with plenty of big-city amenities.

Kennedale has grown rapidly in recent decades, with its population increasing more than 60 percent between 1990 and 2010 alone. This growth has made Kennedale a sprawling area even though it still has relatively few people.Commute times may be longer than average, because residential developments are spread throughout the city.

The city is particularly family-friendly, hosting a number of events that are especially popular with children. One such event is KIDFISH, which exposes children to new outdoor experiences like fishing, and families can borrow fishing poles and learn about fishing at local waterways. Another major event in the city is the community-wide garage sale and spring clean-up.
