About Kennesaw

Kennesaw is a thriving city located in the greater metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia. The city boasts excellent parks and recreational programs, safe neighborhoods and a strong central business district that have made it an increasingly popular place to live. Just under 30 miles from Atlanta, Kennesaw maintains an attractive small-town feel with quick access to the big city.

The History of Kennesaw

Kennesaw's origins date back to the mid-19th century, when the area first sprang to life with the construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. During the Civil War, the surrounding land was the site of the critical Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. You can still visit many of the historic battlefields at the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park just outside the city. After the war, the population decreased for a short time, until the city was incorporated in 1887.

In the city's early years, its primary industries were the railroad, cotton and finance. Parcels of land throughout Kennesaw were purchased and developed over the decades, providing space for residential, commercial and industrial developments.

Kennesaw and Cobb County host a number of retailers, government agencies, education providers, entertainment complexes and many more business organizations. Retailers The Home Depot, Publix, Kroger and Walmart are some of the area's largest employers, a group that also includes Cobb County Schools and Kennesaw State University.
