About Canton

Canton is the county seat of Georgia's Cherokee County, and has seen dramatic growth since the late 1990s. The city features several picturesque neighborhoods, including small gated communities, large estate lots and charming tree-lined streets. The Canton Historic Downtown Loop is home to a thriving residential area as well, designed for a work-play lifestyle and providing options for dining, shopping and entertainment just minutes from home.

The History of Canton Industry

Though the city was first incorporated in the hopes of starting a thriving silk business in the state, it was denim that ultimately earned Canton its claim in the fabric industry. "Canton Denim" was a well-known term in the region, and the distinctive fabric helped the local economy grow and prosper.

Marble became a major industry in the area as well, thanks to the Georgia Marble Finishing Works. Cagle's Dairy and Seaboard Farms Poultry were also major employers in early Canton. Central Soya Corporation's poultry division relocated to the city in the 1950s, with facilities still in operation today under the Pilgrim's Pride name.

More-recent economic development in the area includes a multi-million-dollar technology park, which has brought a number of jobs to Canton.

It also features cooking demonstrations, children's activities and live music.
