Chamblee is a small city that covers less than eight square miles in Georgia's DeKalb County. The community saw slow but steady growth from 1980 to 2000, and then a massive population spike occurred, nearly tripling the number of residents. Chamblee is home to several distinct neighborhoods, including a historic downtown district, a local Chinatown and several desirable residential communities.

The History of Chamblee

For quite some time, the land where Chamblee now sits was covered with extensive dairy farms. When a major railroad intersection was built in the area, a small settlement called Roswell Junction was established. When a post office was added to the community, it was decided that a new name should be selected, and Chamblee was picked at random from a list of submitted ideas. The city was officially incorporated in 1907.

The city's early economy had three main sectors: railroads, dairies and the military. Much of the dairy land was converted to Camp Gordon in 1917 and became home to 40,000 military personnel. This brought the need for 40 new stores, two hotels, three theaters and a bowling alley, fueling fast and furious growth throughout Chamblee. Because the city was home to many affordable residential communities, it attracted a wave of immigrants that helped diversify and enrich the local culture. The early 2000s was a time of major growth for Chamblee, as a revitalized image propelled the population from just over 9,500 to more than 28,000.

Chamblee is only about two miles from Atlanta, which means that you can easily access its big-city entertainment, dining and nightlife options. The DeKalb County School District operates the schools throughout Chamblee. In addition to traditional elementary, middle and high school campuses, Chamblee is also home to a charter high school and an International Student Center. Private school options are limited in the small city, but nearby Atlanta provides many more to consider.
