The History of Fishers

Fishers has gone through several name changes over the years, including Fishers Station and Fishers Switch. The land was originally owned by Salathiel Fisher, but in 1872 he decided to divide his land into lots for a town. The railroad that went through the town helped bring in new residents and businesses, spurring growth and expansion.

By 1960, just 388 people lived here, but the city's population grew rapidly over the second half of the 20th century. The relocation of the highway and a new connection with I-69 helped ensure the continued growth of Fishers. On Jan. 1, 2015, Fishers officially transitioned from a town to a city.

Fishers Schools

Schools in Fishers are part of Hamilton Southeastern Schools District. Two of the high schools in the district have been ranked among the best high schools in the country, earning recognition by several national publications. The district offers a number of extra-curricular options for students, including academic competitions, athletics and music. There are also a number of learning options including gifted and talented, special education and advanced placement programs.
