About Schaumburg

The thriving village of Schaumburg is one of Chicago's Golden Corridor suburbs, located about 28 miles from the city's downtown center. Surrounded by a number of suburban communities, Schaumburg is best-known as the home of one of the largest malls in the country, numbering over 300 stores.

The History of Schaumburg

Originally, the town of Schaumburg was known as Sarah's Grove, named after a set of three families that all contained a matriarch named Sarah. However, the name was never made official, and was changed to Schaumburg in 1850. The town has always been home to a large German population, was exclusively German until the Great Depression.

Throughout the 1800s, the main occupation in the area was farming, with dairy, cattle and potatoes serving as the main exports. The town grew in the 1950s with the expansion of the O'Hare Field into an international airport and the development of the Northwest Tollway, which connected the community with other parts of the Chicago area.

Jobs in Schaumburg

Schaumburg has emerged as a popular headquarters location for many Japanese companies, as well as a handful of other corporations from around the world. Major companies based in the city include Motorola Solutions, Zurich North America and Career Education Corp.

Although it's certainly possible to commute to Chicago for work, you don't really have to - there are plenty of jobs to choose from in Schaumburg. The city's largest employers provide thousands of local jobs and include Zurich North America, Community Consolidated School District 54, Motorola Solutions, OptumRx and IBM. Community Consolidated School District 54 and Township High School District 211 manage the public schools of Schaumburg, ranging from elementary through high school. The district also offers MacArthur International Spanish Academy and Hoover Math and Science Academy, which are specialized schools. You can also consider one of the many private schools in the area, including a number of parochial campuses.

Roosevelt University is a four-year university in Schaumburg, offering degrees in a number of study programs.
