Enormous rat problem in this location that destroyed over $9,000 worth of valuable work equipment and clean work packaging I had stored there. Increasing rents throughout whole ordeal, on top of it. Horrible, actually dangerous situation all around, for everyone. It took ONE YEAR to get to a point where Public Storage offered me a measly restitution and have been advised BY Public Storage to arbitrate and "deal with their legal team" now and infestation is ongoing after more than a year. Will do!

Closes at a specific time preventing access if you need stuff at any time. Will lock you out of your unit and all access to facility. There are no dolly's so if you have a lot to move you have to use your feet, never mind the long distance you might have to travel if you get an unlucky unit. Customer service is non existent. Cheap and climate controlled are the only positives.

Update: there is still a huge rat problem. We’ve been told over and over that the issue is being worked on but we have more rat poop and pee in our unit than ever before. The entire building smells of filth. The traps they have placed has cobwebs on them indicating that they rarely get serviced or at least the ones I saw. You can hear the rats running around in the overhang outside of the doors to enter. We can’t touch any of our containers without gloves because of all the excrement. Lucky we stored all our belongings in plastic bins instead of boxes. Moving forward we will be in touch with the health department since public storage doesn’t want to take care of the rat infestation. It’s absurd they are still renting new units out to people who have no idea all of their belongings are going to be ruined. AND they just increased our rent for our unit. I wouldn’t recommend placing your items here. Also what the heck’s up with the response they left to my original review?! The dm jimmy doesn’t return your calls and the staff won’t put in a request to lower the rent even though they are fully capable of helping to get it lowered because they won’t do anything about the rats on site. We’ve been polite and reasonable during this whole encounter of us storing here and still NO ONE has attempted to help. I’m sure it it was their items they would be much quicker to assist everyone. No one should be paying over 200$ a month for moldy items and rat poop and dead rats inside of your unit.

**Extremely Disappointed with Public Storage** I recently used Public Storage for my storage needs, and I was thoroughly disappointed with my experience. Upon returning from deployment, I discovered my belongings covered in rat droppings. While the staff member I spoke with was apologetic, she did nothing to address the rat infestation. To make matters worse, Public Storage does not offer waste removal services or the use of the dumpster on site, so we had to pay a separate company to take away the rat-infested items. When I reached out to the corporation about my belongings, which were valued at over $1,000, they only offered a meager $250 in compensation. This lack of support and accountability is unacceptable. I will not be using Public Storage for my future needs and strongly recommend others to steer clear of this business. Additionally, it’s concerning that they are not recognized by the Better Business Bureau. Save yourself the trouble and look for a more reputable storage solution.

Terrible never coming here again, rat poop and pee where all over my belongings over 900$ of items damaged and stained and you get nothing reimburse but 250 for rodents which is unbelievable considering the amount of mouse poop in my unit that I only had for 2 months 🤦🏽‍♀️ this is a joke no way there still in business, I personally will never put my belongings in a storage ever again, and on top of that they only have one moving cart out of the whole building, and when I reported the mice poop the owner didn’t seem bothered at all. Never again

Rats. There are rats and rat traps everywhere in the climate controlled units. Rats have ruined everything not sealed in airtight containers. Insurance will not cover rats. Absolutely disgusting.

just recently helped my girlfriend move out of her unit here after having it over summer break and we are appalled by the state of the unit. from rat poop and urine to even roaches crawling in the unit if your looking for the opportunity to bring some roaches home on your property then i recommend getting a unit here other than that i can’t stress it enough to take your money elsewhere

Absolutely disorganized. Reserved my storage unit online, and paid all fees to move in including for a lock. called to request a change in move in date or to advise I would have to change my move in date by 2 weeks. Spoke to multiple people in an effort to get this done. I was immediately refunded the lock, there was a 30$ non refundable admin fee. I was advised I could not get back, I requested to move my move in 2 weeks back to refrain from paying an additional non refundable fee. I get calls emails and attempts to another charge on my card for a unit I’ve yet to move in. Additionally, I’m receiving calls and emails about a unit not being secured with a lock that I have yet to move in yet. Need less to say, I will be finding a different storage to use.

They have done quite a lot to fix the rat problem that some people have wrote about and their customer service is top notch.

They have a RAT Infestation the smell is horrible they really need to shut it down flatten it and rebuild if possible the employees are doing all they can but at this point the OWNER should step in and stop being so cheap but steady raising the prices this has been a long long ongoing problem that has to be fixed immediately the health department should be all over this maybe 10 On Your Side needs to do a story about this business look at the reviews on the web the problem is only getting worse!!!!!

DO NOT RENT FROM HERE!!!! Customer service is only good because the lady at the desk is sweet, other than that this is a horrible storage unit! The hallways are filled with Rat poop as well as the storage units! This problem has been going on for some months now and NO ONE informed me of the issue, I had to find out myself! The smell in the building is terrible and would probably send someone to the hospital! They are having the front desk lady lie to customers and tell them they are handling it, the problem still hasn’t been handled! They raise your rent every 6 months and also they are still requiring us to pay rent knowing that our stuff is covered in vermin poop and who knows what else??? And don’t try and file a claim because they will only offer $250 when I have items that cost more than that in my unit!!!!!!!

Well, if you like the smell of dead rats, as you’re walking down the halls, this is the storage place for you! Place is infested with rats. But that’s not the worst part, once you are there for 6 to 8 months they will raise the rent by 35%! I called corporate to complain about this. I was told each location is franchised and does whatever they want. I found a new place, that was local and literally half the price. If you value your money, do not rent from this place. Worst experience I have ever had and I have been using storage said since the early 90s.

I GAVE SEEN PPL COME IN WITH FULL COVERAGE GEAR JUST TO MOVE OUT BECAUSE RT FECES WILL BE FALLING ON YOU WHILE YOUR MOVING AND GRABBING YOU BELONGINGS. THEY DO NOT WANT TO ADJUST YOU RATES EVEN WITH THEIR INFESTATION TO GIVE YOU TIME TO MOVE OUT. YOU HAVE NO BATHROOM ACCESS ONCE THE FRONT DESK IS GONE. WORST STORAGE UNIT EXPERIENCE EVER !

This location has a huge rat infestation problem. It appears we have lost just about everything in our unit. If you value your belongings you might want to go somewhere else.. also there are people sleeping in the units as well which is probably what is causing this issue. Rates are not competitive and consistently increasing!

Really blows my mind that Public Storage keeps going up on their prices despite having a rat infection for several months, that has not completely been rectified. You guys should be giving rental relief to the customers you still have. Every time I go in my unit, there’s droppings. Not to mention, you guys failed to notify your customers of this issue at all within the last maybe 7 months. Disappointed and will not ever return again once I’m moved out.

Read the fine print. They advertise very low "sale" rates but the agreement says they can change the rate anytime with 30 days notice. False advertisement

Update 12/22/23: RATS!!!! You can smell the rats! There are an insane amount rat dropping on all of my personal and business stuff! There is little being done to fix the issue! The had to audacity to increase the rent on my unit with such deplorable conditions! Avoid at all costs!!! I have 2 units with the facility. There aren’t any public restrooms available so, keep that in mind if you’re in your units after business hours. The rear gate was broken for 2 weeks, at one point I had to crawl under the front gate to put my code in to exit… The main elevator wall malfunctioning. Terrible maintenance issues for a multibillion dollar company. They increase you rent for your unit significantly in a couple months!

I am here at the public storage on 35th street in Norfolk Va, I am an event planner and had a wedding last night to do and I’m here at the storage place with this rented uhaul full of my event stuff to put in my unit and I cannot get in the gate. I am supposed to have access from 6am -9pm but the gate will not open after putting my code in 5 times. I am more than livid because I need to have this uhaul back by 8am and I have a 8:30 work meeting. I am more than inconvenienced. You all harass literally harass me every month for my payment and yet I don’t have the access I need. Also my unit and the entire storage facility is infested with mice and my unit has mouse droppings all over the place. I have not moved because I just haven’t had the time due to my busy holiday work schedule. But several of my table linens have been distroyed because of the mice do I have stopped putting linens in the unit. The people who work here aren’t the friendliest and I came by to get vases out of my unit on Tuesday around 7pm and all the orange moving carts were locked up in the office so I had to pack each box out one at a time and many were very heavy!!!! I’m extremely dissatisfied with my service!!!!! I’ve been here 2 years and you treat your clients badly. I am super upset that I now will have to pay for an extra day of this uhaul because I did not have the access time I’m paying for. I’m not sure how you stay in business, probably people like me who just don’t have time to move, well now I’m just gonna have to find some time!

What I store in my unit is my livelihood. It's what I sell to keep the lights on and pay my bills. I left my last facility because people were opening my unit and stealing. So I moved all of my inventory to Public Storage roughly 2 weeks ago. Now I am facing another move as my unit at Public Storage is full of rat feces, as pictured. I want to love this place because it is nice and so are the ladies up front, but this is both a health hazard and a risk to my business. I am an honest man just trying to survive, so I ask the owners/operators of Public Storage to please show some respect to your clients and swiftly eliminate the rats. Please do not cheap out on exterminaters and actually hire a team or teams that will do it quickly. What you are doing now is not helping. I've had multiple people come up to me while I was in my unit complaining about the rats. That is no way to run a business. I will change my review to 5 stars if/when the issue is resolved. Thank you .

RATS RATS RATS. PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE!!! This entire facility is infested with rats and the staff working there is NOT doing anything to fix the situation. Just like other tenants, our unit is also covered with rat feces/urine. We're currently out of the state and we did not find out about this until we went there last week. We've rented a 10x10 unit since June 2022 and our rate has increased drastically. We're now paying $238 for this mess ($223 for rent and $15 for insurance) every month. They told us to file a claim but we don't even know if Public Storage resolves the situation promptly. We're a military family and PCSing in the next a few months and we certainly do not want to be charged for this nonsense any more. We rented another Public Storage on Holland Road in VA Beach a few years ago and we did not like how our stuff was covered in dust and pollen since it was an outdoor unit so we specifically chose the one with climate control and this is what we got. Beyond disappointed. Public Storage... NEVER AGAIN!

WARNING: RAPID RENT INCREASES In just over a year they have raised the rent on my unit twice. It started at $111 and is now at $175. Meanwhile they are still advertising the same unit online for $93/month.

Disgusting!!!!!! I literally just watched a rat run across one of the pipes hanging from the ceiling when I came to get something out of my unit. The smell the moment you walk in is ungodly. Rats!! Big rats!! My wife and I put our valuable things into storage here beginning in March, about eight months ago. We chose a large unit (10x20) and filled it with furniture, etc. and to put off the inevitable rent increase, I paid an entire year in advance. So far so good. Over the months we would go there only infrequently, usually to drop something off. Then this past Friday October 27th, when we opened the door to our storage unit we were greeted by three very large rats sitting on top of our belongings in the back of the storage unit (absolutely no exaggeration, they looked the size of guinea pigs!!), when I made some noise by banging around, they climbed onto the sprinkler pipe and quickly exited to the adjoining unit! Look, I've been around, retired Air Force and Army and for over 25 years managed large multi-family communities in several states, I'm not easily alarmed, however the size of these rats and the amount of rat feces sprinkled liberally all over our things was absolutely appalling!! I decided to move our possessions immediately to a safe location, fortunately College Hunks of Virginia Beach was very responsive and helped us to get out of this rodent infested facility by the following Tuesday even though it was on very. short notice and the last day of the month (they were extremely responsive, very professional!). Overall, I think we were very lucky, although rat droppings were everywhere, since most of our things were "hard" items (boxes and wood furniture, etc.) and we only had a relative few fabric covered items which had mostly been plastic wrapped (always pay a little extra for this service, it definitely paid off in protection!!) we came out with less damage than we originally feared. However, we did have to pay moving costs and for a new storage unit, costs which were over $900 in unforeseen and unplanned expenses when we had every reason to believe our things were stored in a safe and secure place, because that's what Public Storage of Norfolk on 35h Street represented to us! I hate writing negative things about any business or person, it takes a lot for me to do so, but this is just too much! After seeing the rats in our unit, I went on line and saw the reviews that had been posted (I researched reviews before we chose this place, but evidently the really negative reviews really didn't start up until about the time we rented our unit!) with most stating that this was a long term issue. We are upset that we weren't notified about this issue. There should have been notification to every person renting a unit about this advising of the issue and stating what measures are being taken to address it. Instead there has only been silence! When I notified the onsite manager, Brenda, about the rats in our unit, she gave us a mostly empty box of moth balls (I think there were about twelve left in the box) and said we could put it in our unit and it might help make the rats stay out! Really??!!! That's it?!!!! Fricking moth balls!!! She did say that they had a pest service working the issue and that they were going to put down traps too besides the many bait stations throughout the facility (incidentally, the way bait stations work is that the rats eat the bait, then go somewhere to die, like a storage unit, for example. Hello!!). I am upset that they knew they had this issue when we moved our valuable things into this place! I don't care if someone is afraid to lose their job for saying something about it, they are ALL responsible for this. How is it okay for Public Storage of Norfolk on 35th Street to represent itself as a safe place to store your valuable and personal possessions without at least telling us that "oh, by the way, you could have rats crawl all over your valuables and defecate and urinate on them and possibly tear them up to nest in them, oh by the way", just saying!! After reading this it goes without saying that I emphatically do not recommend this place!!

RATS. Let me first say, both Karen and Brenda have been the sweetest, nicest, most helpful people you can imagine. This is not about them. And until I discovered what was happening, I was very satisfied with this place.This facility is absolutely infested with rats. When I opened my unit, ALL of my furniture was absolutely covered with rat poop, and every upholstered surface (sofas, ottomans, chairs) was absolutely saturated with rat urine (see attached photos). All of my precious, valuable furniture is now destroyed. The smell of the urine is so bad that it permeates the air as soon as you walk in to the facility. There are traps on the floor, which are useless, as the rats are using the overhead pipes to drop in to the units, which are covered by a cage, but with huge gaps in the sides. This place needs to be completely sealed off and fumigated IMMEDIATELY, and the customers NEED TO BE CONTACTED and informed of what’s happening here. Both Brenda and Karen admitted to me that they have known about this for OVER A YEAR. When I asked why I had not been notified that there was an issue, they told me that they wanted to, but were told they would be fired if they did. So what we have here is a coverup and a major health hazard. I filled half of a black hefty trash bag with poop and wrappers from food that had been brought by the rats into my unit: specifically, dozens of cheese stick wrappers. Apparently someone in another unit was storing food, and this is what started the whole thing. Not Public Storage’s fault in and of itself: the fault lies with covering it up and not telling the customers that their stuff was at risk of being destroyed by an infestation they were well aware of for over a year. If you have stuff here, GET IT OUT NOW. They are going around every morning and sweeping up all of the rat poop “so that nobody will see it and freak out,” which is verbatim what they told me. When I asked for the name of the district manager, they told me they would be fired if they told me. I have placed multiple calls to this person through the customer care department, and gotten no call back thus far. I am now in the process of making an insurance claim, and have contacted a lawyer. This is absolutely disgusting: I am LIVID that even with a mask and gloves, I was exposed to all of this pee and poop, which is a health hazard. I called the health department this morning to report this. I only hope that somebody reads this and save themselves from what I am now having to go through. SHAME ON YOU, Public Storage.

This place is so bad that wen you look at the picture it makes it look good but it's not for one your payment can be due on the 1 and they call you the 29th and then you put your things in it and they pets get in it and pee and poo in it I have a 600 chair that they made a house in it I talk with the manager she said call the insurance company why it's y'all not them I called the company and been on hold for 1 hours

After moving my things in, apparently they increase your rate without a text, phone call or a notification on the app they provide. TWICE!! It went from $139 to $234. After a 3 month gap in going to my storage unit I finally showed up and found myself rained on by rat fecal matter and scurrying little rodent feet running away. Once I began to rifle through the horrendous and revolting mess I finally ran into the source of the foul odor I had been smelling. I thought it was just urine and fecal matter. Nope.

STINKY RAT CITY!! I just moved to VA and reserved a climate control unit before it left my state. The evening I got into town I went to the unit and upon opening the first door I was hit with a smell of death(I imagine that’s what it smells like)! Went to view my unit and saw rats. I went back to my car and I could hear the rats in the ceiling above where I parked! I returned the next day to get a refund. If you value your belongs then drive by fast, don’t stop!!

Brenda was super helpful throughout the whole experience. She explained everything I needed and also provided me with tips on how I should rent, use the facilities, and more. The storage unit was clean and a perfect sizes for college students with minimal things. The only problem that occurred was being trapped inside the gate because of the gate not working, other than that it was a great experience.

DO NOT RENT HERE! They have a terrible RAT infestation. Rat feces and damage was all throughout my unit and facility. You can smell the rat feces all inside. We even saw a critter running around inside. They also do not prorate your rent payment for moving out early. I still had to pay a full month's rent even though I was moving out early.

RATS! If you choose to store your belongings here be prepared to deal with the rat infestation at the facility. I had a unit here for 7 months and the amount of damage was considerable. Public Storage won’t compensate you for any damage as you “rent at your own risk” and if you have USAA insurance they also won’t cover any damage due to a “insect, vermin, rodent” clause in their renters insurance policy. You can expect lots of rat feces and urine as well as considerable damage from chewing. DO NOT UTILIZE THIS FACILITY

Had a minor panic attack because my unit was locked while I went to grab food. I came back and couldn't find anyone. I came back again and someone had handled my items inside and outside of my unit while looking for someone. There are obvious communication issues and I'm looking to remove my items from the unit. I no longer feel comfortable at this location.

This was my first time having to use a storage, and moving can be so hectic! This was one of the best places to make me comfortable about my belongings being there. NOT TO MENTION; Brenda, is AMAZING! When I first arrived there were not any carts to make our move to the second floor easier! Brenda went around and fortunately found us one (the building is HUGE) if she didn’t we would of been there way after the 9pm and could of got penalized so she helped tremendously! Also, after an exhausting move I didn’t lock my lock correctly and once again BRENDA called me and informed me my lock wasn’t locked correctly and that she had noticed that doing her end of the shift round. THERE IS OVER 1400 units There and she spotted my lock incorrectly locked, imagine how many others she notices and then CALLS and helps people properly secure there unit. I always think I’m leaving something or forgetting to do something but I know when I leave my storage unit, that if I do, Brenda will see notice it and give me and call and that’s why I trust public storage with my belongings.

The other storage unit lady where my belongings is at had to leave early then what she told me on the phone. Brenda is super awesome! She has always looked out for me for almost everything, such as disputing certain payment errors in a timely fashion and helping me get my stuff to my storage unit. (Super helpful when I was pregnant and couldn’t make too many trips lol) Only thing I would say I dislike about Public Storage is just that they raise their prices on the same storage unit over time and that kinda sucks.
