Spartanburg, nicknamed "The Hub City," is a large city in northern South Carolina. It's part of a region referred to as "The Upstate," about 80 miles west of Charlotte. Spartanburg has a strong economy that's bolstered by the presence of major companies like BMW and Denny's. It also offers a number of scenic parks, historical points of interest and modern-day amenities, all of which attract both visitors and new residents.

The History of Spartanburg

Pursuant to a treaty with the Cherokee people in 1753, the land of Spartanburg was claimed for settlement by Europeans. The area hosted a large number of Revolutionary War battles, nearly more than any other place in the country, but quieted down significantly after the war. At that point, homes and farms began multiplying rapidly.

Spartanburg was officially incorporated in 1831. Throughout the years, it became known for the many railroads that come through the city, as well as for its leading role in the textile industry. In the Spartanburg area, approximately 40 textile mills were built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and many remain standing today.

Recent revitalization efforts in the downtown commercial district have fueled major growth, including restoration of several historical buildings in the area. QS/1 Data Systems is also headquartered in the downtown area, and a large Marriott hotel offers a range of hospitality roles. The world headquarters and research facility of Milliken & Co., a chemical and textile manufacturer, is another important part of the local economy. In addition, BMW operates a large manufacturing facility in the neighboring city of Greer, providing several thousand local jobs that greatly benefit the city of Spartanburg.

Schools in Spartanburg are part of Spartanburg County School District, which is divided into seven mini-districts. The city is also home to several private and charter schools, including Montessori, college prep and faith-based campuses.

Spartanburg is a college town, so you'll find a number of campuses to choose from if you're planning on pursuing higher education.
