About Mauldin

Mauldin is a rapidly-growing city just south of the center of Greenville County, tucked into the northwestern corner of South Carolina. Between 1990 and 2010 alone, the city doubled in size, drawing many people with its friendly sense of community, active arts and culture scene, scenic natural setting and useful amenities.

The History of Mauldin

The city's official history began in 1784 when Benjamin Griffith received a grant for 100 acres in the area now known as Mauldin. In 1868, Willis William Butler purchased a home at Reedy River Road and Laurens Road, the town's only crossroads at that time. At that point, the area became known as Butler's Crossroads and Butler's Corners.

In 1886, the town began growing with the Mauldin Train Depot construction project. Named after Lt. Gov. W. L. Mauldin, the railroad helped bring new people and businesses to the community. In 1890, Mauldin received its first charter. While the town reincorporated and elected its first mayor on Feb. 14, 1910, the charter was revoked in 1932 as a result of extreme hardships during the Great Depression. However, on May 28, 1957, the town was once again reincorporated, and in 1969, it officially became a city.

Mauldin's impressive rate of growth can be attributed to many different factors, not the least of which is the excellent quality of life it offers. Arts, culture, recreation and community events are all plentiful, with something for locals of all ages and interests.

The Mauldin Cultural Center hosts more than 1,000 events every year, including community health seminars, job fairs, local school events, theater performances and more. The center also offers classes, private lessons and workshops in a variety of art-focused subjects. You can try a wood carving class, take voice lessons or enroll your child in a robotics workshop. The Mauldin Sports Center is also a popular gathering place in the city, with its large rock climbing wall, a fitness center and many fitness classes to choose from. Senior citizens also have a local senior center, where they can participate in daily activities, educational seminars and group field trips.

In addition to its numerous programs and activities, Mauldin also offers many natural landmarks within easy driving distance. The Blue Ridge Mountains and Lake Conestee are two of the best-known destinations in the Mauldin area, offering a number of recreational activities such as whitewater rafting, horseback riding, hiking and fishing.

Mauldin Schools

Greenville County School District manages the public schools of Mauldin and some of its neighboring communities. Mauldin is a popular home for families because of its numerous award-winning schools. There are also several private schools in the area, including the popular Montessori School of Mauldin.

If you're hoping to pursue a college degree, several campus options are nearby. Greenville, located a few miles outside Mauldin, has many colleges and universities, including Virginia College Greenville, Furman University and Greenville Technical College.

• Utilities: Mauldin's primary utilities providers include Piedmont Natural Gas, Greenville Water, Duke Energy and Laurens Electric Co-op (you'll choose one of the two power companies). The city's public works department provides sewer services.
• Garbage and Recycling: Roll-out containers for trash and recycling can be purchased from the city. You can expect weekly collection, with the exception of major holidays.
• Transportation: Greenlink, the county's public bus system, offers several stops on its route through Mauldin.

The city has both established homes and new construction options, as well as apartments and town homes for rent.
