Public Storage Supports Military Spouses and the Aloha Spirit in Hawaii

At Public Storage, we’re always looking to grow and support the communities we serve and in Hawaii we’re doing that through a unique program that helps military spouses find employment.

“It’s a small island,” says Chanda Keawe, a district manager who oversees facilities in the Honolulu area. “Our customers and co-workers are our friends, our families, our neighbors. The aloha spirit is a part of Hawaiian culture, and it means we treat each other with kindness and respect.”

That respect extends to the thousands of active U.S. military personnel in Hawaii. Public Storage is proud to support members of the U.S. military and their spouses across the country, and as a Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) company, we are committed to recruiting, hiring, and retaining military spouses.

So it’s no surprise team members at our Hawaii facilities always bring the “aloha spirit” whether they’re assisting a long time customer or helping someone move-in.

Supporting Military Spouses

Chanyce “Ling” Moore’s husband is in the U.S. Army. After her husband was stationed in Hawaii and they moved from the mainland, she started a new job as a property manager for Public Storage in Pearl City, Hawaii.

With more than 3,000 facilities across the country, we’re uniquely positioned to support military spouses who move after a Permanent Change of Station (PCS).

If a Public Storage employee moves with their spouse due to a PCS, we may be able to help that employee transition their job to a new location when we have facilities and openings in those areas.

“When you move to a different place, it can be challenging to find a job,” Moore says. “Having that support with PCS is very convenient, especially if you’re pursuing a long-term career with a company.”

Creating Flexibility and Independence

On the job, she enjoys the independence and self-reliance that come with managing a facility, while incentive plans help add to her take-home pay.

We offer both full- and part-time hours, and Moore also appreciates the flexibility to create a schedule that suits her life.

“It lets me have the time I need with my family,” she says.

Our teams in Hawaii are welcoming and supportive, says Keawe.

“We do a lot to help each other and our customers. At the same time, these are great roles for people who are really self-motivated to succeed and grow. Our work also provides a good mix of administrative office tasks with active duties on the property — so you can still get your steps in!”

Growing Sustainably

We’re actively hiring in Hawaii, whether it’s through our military spouses program or opportunities for new employees to advance and pursue career development within the company.

As we continue our sustainable growth in the Honolulu area, we’re proud to reflect the values of the communities we serve. Over the summer, we started construction of our newest facility with a traditional ground blessing performed by a Hawaiian minister, or kahu. It was a chance to honor the land and show respect for the rich natural resources and cultural traditions of Hawaii.

And it’s just another way our Hawaii team members live by the aloha spirit!
