Public Storage Certified Great Place to Work
Jul 22, 2024 / Liset Marquez
Public Storage is a great place to work—but you don’t have to take our word for it. Our employees have bestowed upon us this prestigious certification because of our excellent company culture.
This official certification was determined by recent employee feedback given to Great Place to Work®, which is a global authority on what determines company greatness in the eyes of its employees. Key indicators such as workplace culture, employee experience, and leadership are all factored into the evaluation.
Public Storage CEO Joe Russell shared that this latest recognition is a reflection of our best-in-class team, who not only embody our core values, but also go above and beyond every day for our customers—and each other.
“This is a tremendous honor for our organization and especially meaningful because it is the only recognition based entirely on what employees report about their workplace experience,”; he said in an internal memo.
Great Place to Work conducted a survey asking workers across industries to describe their employee experience. The survey found jobseekers are 4.5 times more likely to find a great boss at a company certified as a Great Place to Work.
And now Public Storage is honored to be among those certified organizations.
“I am proud of the culture we have here at Public Storage, and I am humbled that our employees have recognized us as a Great Place to Work,” shared Natalia N. Johnson, Chief Administrative Officer.
The company culture has consistently received high praise from Public Storage employees. For Chad Krasnow, the key has been his teammates, who not only took the time to help him improve his skills, but who also want to see him succeed. That culture has motivated him to do his best.
He joined Public Storage as a District Manager in the Dallas region a decade ago and has since been promoted to a regional manager overseeing our markets in Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga and Louisville.
“Seeing everyone else’s drive for success brings me to work each day with that little extra boost, knowing that I am working amongst some of the smartest people in the business,” Krasnow said. “I couldn’t be more proud of what we have accomplished as a team and I look forward to continuing my career behind the orange doors.”
We’re proud to divulge that the Great Place to Work Certification is just the latest recognition we’ve earned this year! Forbes named us one of America’s Best Employers for 2022. We’re also grateful to once again be named one of the top 10 companies for Best Operations Team, top 100 for Best Company Outlook, and our team members in Los Angeles voted us one of the top 10 Best Places to Work, according to Comparably. Employee feedback was crucial to each of these 2022 accolades.
Careers at Public Storage
With 50 years of experience in this industry, we know what it takes to serve our customers and elevate our team members with the best training.
But we’re always looking to improve upon our employee experience. So five years ago we started employee surveys, which today have led to a range of changes within the company. Employee feedback inspired us to update our uniforms at the request of employees and we have expanded roles and career opportunities across the company. For example, our dedicated Property Managers now have a clear path to earn promotion to District Managers.
Listening to employees and then implementing their ideas likely contributed to the favorable responses to the Great Place to Work survey.
“We are the only major self-storage company that is certified and this is another tribute to the talented team and exemplary leadership here at Public Storage,” Russell explained about the certification.
Our team members gave high rankings to management for trusting them to get work done without micromanaging, for giving more and more responsibility along with adequate training, and for being so competent at executing their own jobs.
Of equal importance to employees was cooperation among co-workers.
Property Manager Sandra joined our Seattle team in 2018. She now oversees a property and appreciates the independence that comes with the role.
“You can be your own manager but when we need help, they’re there for us,” she said.
Abdul Levy, who joined the Illinois Public Storage team 11 years ago, remembers immediately feeling welcomed and supported by his colleagues, who each took time to share their knowledge and ideas with him to help him succeed.
“The teamwork here has been second to none and this is one of the main reasons I love it here,” Levy said.
He was drawn to Public Storage because of the advancement opportunities, which are earned through performance and not seniority, as well as the generous benefits package, among other factors.
“Public Storage is the largest and best storage company in the industry. It fills you with pride to be associated with the market’s elite provider,” Levy said. “The level of service, flexibility and mentoring that is provided here can’t be duplicated anywhere else—that is why this is the only place to be.”
