About Arlington

Arlington is a small city in Washington's Snohomish County. Part of the greater Seattle metro area, Arlington is situated 10 miles north of Everett and 40 miles north of Seattle. It comprises several smaller residential neighborhoods, a historical downtown district and clusters of retail shops and restaurants.

The History of Arlington

Initially, the area where Arlington now stands was planned as two separate towns by settlers in the 1880s. The area came to be known as Arlington, after Lord Henry Arlington, who served on the cabinet of Charles II of England. Arlington ended up absorbing its smaller neighbor, Haller City, and incorporated as a city in 1903.

For many decades, the Arlington economy was based on timber and agriculture. After the Great Depression, it was chosen as a site for many government relief agency projects, including a small airport that was later used as an air base during World War II. In the 1980s, Arlington experienced significant growth, evolving into a thriving suburb of Seattle.

As a resident of Arlington, you'll have plenty of places to exercise and play in local parks, including Arlington Airport Park, J. Rudy York Memorial Park and Forest Trail Park. Arlington Rotary Disc Golf Course and the Zimmerman Hill Climb provide unique recreational facilities.

Arlington is home to several companies that conduct business throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The local aerospace industry is especially strong, with an industrial area outside Arlington Municipal Airport housing more than 20 manufacturing businesses that support Boeing and other aircraft firms. Arlington also provides many jobs in sales, office and administrative roles. The city is home to the headquarters of Corporate Office Supply, energy firms AES Corp. and Touchstone Energy, and tech firms Applied Predictive Technologies, Opower and Rosetta Stone. Together, this diverse mix of companies and industries provides a wide range of local jobs as well as a strong, solid economy.

Arlington Schools

Arlington Public Schools oversees the public schools in the area, including elementary, middle and high schools. There are a few private schools just outside the community, including both faith-based and secular campuses. You can also find a handful of colleges and universities within a reasonable driving distance of Arlington.
