About Moore

Moore is a family-centered city in central Oklahoma, located between the neighboring cities of Oklahoma City and Norman. Even though Moore is just a midsize city compared to many other American communities, it’s actually one of the largest in the rural state of Oklahoma. Because it’s only about 10 miles from Oklahoma City, Moore provides easy access to the state’s major metropolitan center.

The History of Moore

According to local history, Moore’s founding can be traced back to a man named Al Moore, an employee of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. During the Land Run of 1889, he worked as a train conductor and made his home in a boxcar at the railway camp.

However, his unusual home often made it difficult for him to receive his mail, and he grew frustrated with the situation. He decided to paint his last name on a piece of wood and nail it to the boxcar, to avoid any further confusion. When the small settlement was appointed a postmaster, the name was applied to the entire community. In 1893, the town incorporated and officially chose to keep the name of Moore.

Although Moore is a large city by Oklahoma standards, it still maintains a small-town feel that attracts many young families, singles and retirees alike. There are plenty of conveniently located amenities in the area, whether you choose to stay close to home in Moore or make the short drive to Oklahoma City.

There are several local parks throughout Moore, featuring walking trails, water play areas, playgrounds, picnic shelters, ponds and more. There’s also a community dog park, and a skate park for children and adults. The city’s parks and recreation department oversees a variety of sports leagues, including youth and adult sports.

Schools in Moore

Moore Public Schools oversees the public elementary, middle and high schools in the city. There’s a handful of private schools in the area as well, primarily church-based campuses.

Moore is also home to the very small Randall University, and just a short drive from the University of Oklahoma.

• Utilities: Moore receives utilities services from the Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Oklahoma Natural Gas and the City of Moore Public Utilities Department.
• Garbage and Recycling: Trash collection is conducted once weekly, on a schedule that splits the city into several collection zones. You can also request an additional disposal can, if needed, for a small fee.
• Transportation: You can expect to make a short drive to Oklahoma City to utilize the regional bus system. However, senior citizens can use Moore’s paratransit system.

Moore Housing

Like many areas of Oklahoma, Moore is an extremely affordable place to live. Home prices are well below the national average, though slightly higher than the Oklahoma state average. The city has a large, diverse housing market that includes plenty of options for a variety of tastes and styles. Most single-family homes are traditional, with brick exteriors and garages.
