The hamlet has a long history that dates back to the 17th century, and many markers of its past are still standing today.

The History of Miller Place

Before European settlers ever arrived, the land where Miller Place is now located was inhabited by the native Setalcott tribe. In 1664, settlers arrived and purchased the land, which also included the future site of Mount Sinai, New York. Captain John Scott constructed the area's first known home, naming it "Braebourne." Among the earliest settlers of the area were the Miller family, the people for whom the community was named.

In the late 19th century, Miller Place became a vacation spot that was very popular in the summer months. Beachside bungalows and cabins dotted the shoreline, and a large Girl Scouts camp was open until the 1980s. Aside from tourism, much of the economy of Miller's Place was focused on agriculture. However, the suburban movement that changed many small towns across America also affected Miller's Place, helping it transition into a densely-population suburban community.

Although the Big Apple is too far for many people to consider a daily commute, it's still close enough for an enjoyable day-trip. After just an hour's drive, you can take advantage of a huge range of options for dining, shopping, arts, culture and entertainment.

Miller Place has plenty of amenities to offer as well, despite being a small, quiet hamlet. A number of historical buildings are spread throughout the hamlet, many of which house modern-day businesses. You'll find many family-owned businesses in the area, including a well-known ice cream parlor, coffee shops, bagel shops, pizza parlors and a small deli.

Public school students in Miller Place attend Miller Place Union Free School District. Private school options in Miller Place are very limited, mainly due to its small size. However, if you're willing to drive to neighboring communities, you can find a few options there.
