About Rosemount
Rosemount is a small city in Minnesota's Dakota County, located just south of the Twin Cities. Many families, were attracted here by the quiet suburban lifestyle, convenient amenities and family-friendly events.
The History of Rosemount
Originally the home of a Sioux Indian tribe, the town began to attract immigrants from Scotland and Ireland in the mid-1800s. In 1858, it was officially incorporated as a township, with fewer than 100 people living within its borders. For many decades, Rosemount grew very slowly. Until the late 1940s, the local population failed to surpass 500. Like many parts of the country, however, Rosemount grew with the post-World War II housing boom, as veterans and their families looked for quiet residential communities to call home. In 1972, Rosemount was incorporated as a city.
When the name of the city was chosen, there was initially much debate between Rosemount and Saratoga. The former was selected in honor of the community's strong Irish heritage. This influence is still seen throughout the town, with many high school sports teams taking the name "Irish."
Living and Working in Rosemount
There are many draws to becoming a Rosemount local, such as its 29 parks, recreational activities (including a local favorite called broomball) and top-notch schools. Its proximity to both Minneapolis and St. Paul also makes it the ideal location to easily access jobs and entertainment while still enjoying small-town living. For these and other factors, Rosemount has earned a spot on Time magazine's "Best Places to Live" list.
Local events include Leprechaun Days, yet another tribute to the city's Irish heritage. This summertime cultural celebration stretches over 10 days, featuring a parade, carnival games, live music and more. In the count-down to Leprechaun Days, the city hosts a chili cook-off event every February, marking the halfway point to the biggest event of the year.
Rosemount is perhaps best known for the Pine Bed Refinery, a huge oil refinery that's among the largest in the nation. Other industries in the town include education, logistics, retail and manufacturing. Job growth has been positive, which is a good sign if you're planning to look for a job in Rosemount.
