Warren is one of Michigan's largest cities, a thriving suburb of Detroit and the most populous city in Macomb County. The History of Warren

In the 1600s, European settlers arrived in Michigan and began laying the foundation for what would become the city of Warren. Macomb County was formed in 1818, but most settlers stayed away until convenient transportation became available in the 1830s. In 1837, Hickory Township was formed, and then Warren Village was incorporated in 1893. It grew at a slow pace at first, but the post-war baby boom brought about a major population explosion in the 1940s and '50s. Rapid growth continued into the 1960s, as the city's population reached its peak at nearly 180,000.

Living in Warren

Warren provides plenty of options for entertainment and recreation, especially focusing on family-friendly amenities. For instance, families can enjoy the Warren Community Center Indoor Waterpark, the Detroit Zoo and numerous parks and recreation areas. Locals of all ages are welcome at the Warren Symphony Orchestra's regular performances, and the Fine Arts Center offers arts classes for children and adults.

Warren has a lower unemployment rate than the Michigan average, which makes it a fairly good city for job hunting. Like many cities in the Detroit area, Warren is home to a busy auto industry. Its largest employers include General Motors and Chrysler, as well as the U.S. Army's TACOM headquarters, St. John Macomb Hospital, the local school district and retail furniture chain Art Van.

Warren Schools

As a large city, Warren is served by several public school districts, including Center Line Public Schools, East Detroit Public Schools, Fitzgerald Public Schools, Van Dyke Public Schools, Warren Consolidated Public Schools and Warren Woods Public Schools. The districts are overseen by Macomb County Intermediate Schools District. You can also enroll your child in one of Warren's several private or charter schools.

Post-secondary institutions in Warren include Davenport University and Macomb Community College (South Campus).
