The History of Farmington Hills

Like many parts of the United States, the area where Farmington Hills is now located was originally home to Native Americans. Early in the 19th century, a Quaker settler from Farmington, New York, came to the area, bringing his family and many associates once he saw the potential of the land. The settlement they established was called Quakertown.

In 1826, a post office was constructed and named Farmington (the post office still stands today as a designated historic site). As the surrounding community grew and evolved, it was incorporated as the village of Farmington. Over the years, the town grew, incorporating other communities and increasing in size. Farmington was one of several villages that came together in 1973 to earn incorporation as the city of Farmington Hills.
