Self Storage FAQs
Self-storage prices vary by location, unit size, features, and availability. Smaller units typically cost less than larger ones, and indoor and climate-controlled units may be priced differently than standard units. Public Storage offers month-to-month rentals, so you only pay for the time you need.
Specials vary by location and unit type, so checking current rates and promotions in your area is the best way to find the most up-to-date offers.
Start by taking inventory of what you plan to store and how often you'll need to access it. A small 5x5 unit often fits boxes or small household items, while medium sizes like 10x10 work well for multiple rooms' worth of belongings. Larger units, such as 10x20 or 10x30, are designed for bigger items or business needs.
Indoor Storage Units: Located inside a building with hallway access.
Outdoor Drive-Up Units: Ground-level units you can drive up to for quick loading and unloading.
Climate-Controlled Units: Designed to help maintain more consistent temperature and humidity levels. Availability varies by location.
Vehicle Storage: Options may include parking spaces or enclosed units for cars or small trailers.
RV or Boat Storage: Typically offered as open or covered parking spaces at select locations.
Business Storage: Units suited for storing inventory, equipment, or supplies without the cost of commercial property.

Climate-controlled storage helps maintain more consistent temperature and humidity levels inside the unit. It's commonly used for items like books, fabrics, electronics, or other belongings that can react to extreme heat, cold, or humidity. Climate-controlled storage is available at many—but not all—locations, so availability depends on the facility.
Drive-up access refers to a ground-level storage unit that you can pull your vehicle right up to. This makes loading and unloading quicker because you don't need to use hallways, elevators, or stairs. It's often chosen for storing larger items or boxes you'll want to move in and out easily.
Some storage facilities offer 24/7 access as an added feature, while others provide extended access hours. Availability varies by property, so it's best to check your location's access hours when renting a unit.
Common security features include:
• Gated access with individualized entry codes
• Bright lighting throughout the property
• Onsite staff during office hours
• Video surveillance
• Well-maintained fencing and facility grounds
• Storage unit locks available for purchase
Features can vary widely by location, so reviewing your facility's offerings is recommended.

Ok let’s talk about Public Storage the company who has no loyalty to treat its long time customers correctly. I have had a unit with them 2019 when I was expecting a baby and being harassed in domestic violence and had to move several times during the restraining order with the use of this unit keeping my vital documents and baby keepsake items in it until I could move into a bigger home and get settled down. In the mist of it all I have never seen so many scrutiny charges in my life and now I have been diagnosed with a brain tumor I was late a month and they threw every charge on my account in a month that they could think of and then a representative took the charges off and before I could pay the balance off the same month the charges were removed somebody added the charges back to the account. Today my account is locked and I can’take any type of payment at all and they won’t trouble shoot to see what the bank error message keeps coming up for debit transactions that are not related to a checking or savings the error is the wrong error message ans when I attempted to use my debit card the transaction didn’t run on my debit card I never got a notification from my debit card provider across my phone. I am so tired of this company ignoring valuable customers who pay their way and don’t try to get over on anybody. In this moment the company is robbing me every chance they get for anything my unit was less than 100 dollars when I started now it’s 300 and that’s not the market rate for the unit and every few month in the last two years they have risen this storage unit to the max and keep trying to put lien fees and lock fees on a unit they changed all them locks and I haven’t even been to the unit because of my procedures but I’m being charged two months in a row for locks and extra fees that have no valid understanding. If I haven’t seen the unit and you cut locks off and charged new locks and telling me money can be reimbursed when locks are returned but charging me twice for locks and I haven’t even got to the unit. Make it make sense and the purpose of being inconsiderate with the insane increase of charges and you don’t even charge that amount for a unit and I had a larger unit than this one it was the largest unit at the location and I paid less for a year. The contradictions to what I know and have experienced. No help no assistance nobody being considerate to work with me when I couldn’t get to the bank to pay the bill and told the representative over the phone why I was late. Had all these services medically that I had to pay out of pocket as a mother to be alive for my toddler and these people will find every inhumane reason to attack my account to bring challenges every month making it hard to get the payment paid and then to find the time and money to move it out. If you stealing every dollar from me in every way when can I afford to pay a moving company to move the items out. 285 a month for a smaller unit than the largest unit that I paid only 125 a month smh insane
🔥 Robin and the crew, from who ever did my intake, to following up with a welcome call, it was a Customer’s dream collaboration. Everything was extremely smooth and any minor details were addressed with professionalism and grace. What else can you ask for and it was exponential in that spirit. Greatly appreciated. I’m sure you’ll keep it going much love thank you. ❣️
Jamie was very helpful and friendly with helping us today!!
Wonderful experience!!!! Customer service was great. I was able to fit all my things in my unit.
Love how helpful the staff is here! Super easy going, great at their job, and any concerns I have are promptly dealt with. 10/10 would recommend.
Move in was very easy. You don’t need a physical employees there with you. Carrington called to check on me today and make sure everything went smoothly. My only complaint is the Bluetooth kiosk(codeless entry) doesn’t work and I have to put in my code. Otherwise, very nice facility.
The customer service is amazing. The units are at a fantastic price. Very easy to get to. I would choose public storage again!
Transaction went very smooth, from beginning to end. I got a welcome call from Carrington to make sure the rental went smoothly and to offer assistance if needed. Highly Recommended. Great Storage facility.
Barb was amazing! I had moved into the wrong unit and she was able to help me get everything straightened out. Highly recommend!
Great
Darlene was super helpful! Best storage experience I’ve had
Thanks to ms robin I got everything I need done
Kiosk works well. Helpful staff. Thorough. Helped correct price when my reservation went missing and I had to get a bigger unit because that was all they had available. Chris was very pleasant to work with.
Just wanna say Barbara does a great job and is very helpful always there when needed
Worst place to rent from. I moved out of my unit 10 days before the end of the month. I got a phone call on the 8 th day threatening that if I didn't clean out my unit they were going to charge me a few. Then they don't prorate so I moved out early for nothing. The. On top of that when I already paid for the month on the 7th day before eom. They locked me out. Turned my passcode off after they told me I had to clean it out. How are you going to lock someone out when they paid. You have to be some type of person for that
Barbie is an awesome lady very considerate of her customers and has been very helpful with a lot of things made it a lot easier on me being there
Robin gave me a welcome call. She was very polite and she explained to me about the kiosk in the office and the app on the phone where I could pay my bill and several other things that I can do on my phone. She also told me that the number that she called me from that I could call them 7 days a week they are there if I had any questions.
Robin was great and funny.
Great and safe
Ok so this cool very professional lady named JAZMINE or Jasmine. I didn't get the spelling but she's the greatest!!!!!!
PLEASE DONT RENT FROM THIS PLACE… OUR CAR WAS STOLEN OFF THE LOT IN OUR RENTED CAR SPACE. NO ONE HAS TOLD US ANYTHING. BRANDY HUNG UP ON US WHEN WE CALLED TO ASK QUESTIONS PLEASE BEWARE THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM.
Edit: Shortly after submitting review, a representative reached out to address my concerns and offered to restore the previous price. I bumped up from 1 star to 3 star for the effort and gesture but overall they would have my business if the whole pricing structure was more transparent. They claimed that price fluctuates based on "factors" like occupancy and so forth like they are some kind of hotel. That might make sense for the price they offer prospective clients, but certainly not a great justification for existing customers.
Be warned that they will lure you in with "online rate" that seems very attractive: $60 for a 10'x15'. After 6 months the rate increases start. Jumped to $83. Also note that you have to buy $15/month insurance through them or find your own on top of that. At no point did they misrepresent themselves in terms of guaranteeing that rate for any specific period, but they were not upfront about the rate increase schedule. IMO, the online only pricing is a scheme to get you to quickly reserve a unit without opportunity to poke at their policies. I'm ok with an upfront scheduled rate increase, I get it, promotional periods are commonplace, but the out of nowhere email that rates are going up is not acceptable to me. I think their model is to get you in and wait long enough for you to get all your stuff packed in and then they slowly start bleeding you with rate increases. $20 at first might not be enough to warrant going through all that effort to move your stuff. Give it enough time and I'm sure the rate would reach $120 or higher. Consumer beware, just know what you're getting yourself into.
Chris did an excellent job of providing information about app and kiosk she was really friendly and helpful
Avoid using this place, even if you move out a few days after the first of the month, they will charge you for an entire month. They should prorate your account. It was explained that I could do this and fount out I couldn't. That is terrible business practice.
Thanks you Robin
This review is for Public Storage off E. Washington St. Indianapolis Indiana. I say that because I see too many 4-5 star reviews and think it can't be my new location.
Initially I see on their website they have units available near where I needed that were inside. Inside makes you think climate controlled right? Since most of the time (all of the time in my experience) it being inside is indeed a climate controlled facility. Price wasn't terrible and it was close. I get to facility and am on the "do it yourself" kiosk and get an off site employee (even though they definitely have live on site tenants) to pop on the screen to help and before I can tell her what I am looking for , she disconnected the call. Had she stayed and actually helped, I would not have wasted my time or money. Turns out my inside unit was just that... Inside a building but absolutely not temperature controlled. Instead, it smells so horrible like smelly dirty people's trash and rotting food that they actually have a fan above the entry way doors blowing air outside. Rat droppings inside my unit, got charged $19.99!!! for a lock I didn't need (I assume so they have a set of keys to snoop through your belongings) and no option to opt out of said lock.
I only had my moving van for a short time due to the availability and it being reserved later in the day, so no time to find another facility. Storage of America down the street only had 2nd floor units available and while inside and temperature controlled, I know they don't have an elevator and you gotta carry your belongings up the stairs. I would carry my stuff 10x over to not feel as sick to my stomach as I do about leaving my stuff there yesterday. Access only until 9pm, and when signing up on kiosk, they scan your ID but it doesn't input any of your information on the application/renters agreement requiring you to peck away inputting it all in manually. 3 stars is gracious I feel. Hopefully today I can get reimbursed and move to a different facility. (Will update soon as I feel I am forgetting something else)
Booking my storage unit was quick and easy. Robin called to confirm that I was able to set everything up and asked if there was anything she could do for me.
Robin called me to make sure our experience met our expectations and it surely did!! The kiosk was very easy to use and everything went very fast! Definitely recommend using Public Storage
Robin
The process was easy
Rude and impatient
Great prices and I love how you can sign up at the kiosk right there on the spot. As soon as you’re done, they send you which unit is yours and inside the unit is your new lock and key. SUPER EASY AND CONVENIENT!!! Not to mention the app allows you to open the gate without ever having to roll down your window!
It would be EXTREMELY HELPFUL if someone was on the premises. They do have a office there, but nobody's home.🤬
Elle was a great help I really appreciate her thank you
Miss Elle is always so helpful when I have any issues with my unit
Ms.Ellie is amazing!!! Everytime i come in she's always a friendly and attentive, she gets me in and out so fast!
Only downfall... No carts to transfer heavy items to inner storage spaces
I was sick for a few weeks after renting the unit so didn't get there to put a lock on. They told me over the phone that they would put a lock on but not to worry because I could come in any day before 6 and they would take it off. I was planning to move some stuff tonight and I got here about 15 minutes before 6 and there's a random sign on the door that says sorry they are closed today. I called and talked to a rude person from corporate who decided that all of it is my fault and started asking me questions like, "What time did you get off work today?" Um, why does that matter when they are supposed to be open and I can't get in the unit that I paid for? I asked the rude lady if I could cut the lock off and she said "no, that would result in a judgement against you" For a $5 lock? (I paid $168 already for the unit, so wow.) I left a message for the manager so I'm sure that's going to get me somewhere. I have rented from Storage of America down the street many times and NEVER had a problem, but they were out of units. There's probably a reason they were out of units and this place wasn't.
*update: 5 months after renting, my rent went up by $42/month!
