Kaka'Ako Storage Units Near Interstate H-1
This Honolulu Public Storage is in the Kaka'Ako neighborhood of Honolulu. It's hard to miss this beautiful, multi-level property right on Kapiolani Boulevard between Ward Avenue and Kamakee Street. It features a large selection of indoor storage units and climate-controlled storage units in all sizes.
The location is minutes from downtown Honolulu and Honolulu International Airport, making it an ideal storage spot for commercial customers and business travelers.
Of course, it's also a great spot for residents and visitors to store all the necessities for some fun in the Hawaiian sun.

Kris & Hau at Public Storage in Kapiolani provided great customer service. Friendly and professional staff. Knowledgeable with all questions we had which helped us make a well informed decision on the unit storage we needed. Also, the process of securing storage was smooth. We appreciate the communication.
I have had this unit for about a year and a half and it was recently burglarized. The storage unit is an indoor unit and my lock was not touched. Someone went to the top and cut the roof on the unit to make access. There is minimal security so it is unknown at this time who did it. I’m paying way too much for an indoor unit that should only be accessed by key code or employees to be rummaged through by no fault of my own.
The storage facility had someone in a unit directly in front of mine that looked like they were living out of the unit for at least two months at one point. When I went to my unit they were just hanging out in theirs with a power converter and a laptop.
Facility takes no ownership despite it being their poor design that allowed entry to my unit. If you look at the photo you can see the metal cut and pulled upward. When I asked when it would be repaired, all I got was “I don’t know”.
This has pushed back my scheduled move and now will cost me more to continue storing my items in an unsecured unit. They offered no immediate solutions (moving units, emergency repair, etc). Additionally my rent has doubled over the course of my time here just to have a unit that is easily accessible. There is only one person on duty when I go so it’s unlikely they are even doing routine checks.
It’s unfortunate that this happened. I would caution choosing this location if you’re looking for storage. Burglaries happen but it is the lack of effort to make it right that demonstrates the companies care for customers.

I asked for a breakdown of how my previous payment of the larger space would be credited toward my present smaller space on my account. Clerk told me she couldn't provide that (why not, are there hidden details?).
EDIT: I will add a star because I eventually was able to get a refund after finally being put in touch with a district manager who was kind enough to review the situation and issue a refund. I do very much appreciate her time and effort. However, I will leave my experience up for posterity. There were a significant number of roadblocks and poor customer service that had to be overcome for this basic courtesy to be granted.
I am a military member ordered to move from Hawaii. Unfortunately, I have no control over when the military schedules movers and I was assigned August 1st. As early as possible on August 1st, I let the desk know I would be leaving. I vacated my unit at 9 AM that morning. I was told "you will be charged for the month, it's a month to month contract".
I made every in effort in good faith to vacate the unit as soon as possible within three hours of the start of the billing period - I would have vacated earlier had I the ability to select my moving date. Anyone with eyes or a brain could see I'm clearly not trying to game the system or scam Public Storage out of money or space. Surely Public Storage would allow me a couple of hours of leeway instead of charging me >$200, right?
No. Absolutely not, they said. It's policy. And the employees at the front desk had absolutely zero interest in going out of their way to see if anything could be done or in connecting me to anyone with authority that could consider the matter. A big middle finger was essentially what I got.
I asked if there was anyone I could discuss the issue with as any reasonable empathetic person could see I would not be using the storage space for 741 out of the 744 hours in the month of August. I was given a robot customer service line where after 20 minutes I eventually got someone that referred back to the exact front desk employees that gave me the customer service phone number in the first place.
Public Storage decided against using just a little common sense to apply a very reasonable exception to their usual month to month policy for a military member with no choice but to move early August 1st instead of just a few hours before on July 31st. They have no interest in treating customers with respect or dignity. In my case, I paid >200$ for a few hours of storage space this month and they have every intention of turning around and renting that space out immediately (even though I just paid for it).
Use a non-faceless, more caring company. Public Storage doesn't care about you, your circumstances, or your stuff. I highly recommend Hawaii Self Storage. I've had great experiences with them in the past (even when it comes to billings and their "policies"). Last I vacated from Hawaii Self Storage, I did not realize they required two weeks notice about vacating a unit. I was vacating a week prior to the end of my monthly billing period. However, seeing that I had been a long term customer who had never caused prior issues or missed a bill, they were happy to waive that requirement as it was clear to anyone with eyeballs it was an accident of no real consequence. Public Storage would have never.

The staff at Kapiolani have always been wonderful to me. But today they have blessed me. It is a struggle starting a new business and have more expenses then you can pay for. My rent for storage was going to go up in a month and I was so scared trying to figure out what to do. The staff could see it in my face and I explained my situation. Leina was there listening to me pour my heart out to Kris (another employee- she’s so sweet too) and Leina not only blessed me with three months of a discount but she just had so much faith in what my dreams are. I hope Leina and Kris know how much of a blessing they are to me. I don’t know how to repay them! Love you Kapiolani staff!

I haven’t had really good luck with the storage. They’re never opened when I get there so I could give them my drivers license to take a cart. The elevators are always broken. This is the worst one I’ve been at so far. The rent goes up every so much many months and it goes up 100 bucks each time just beware and it’s usually almost $100 up from what it was before. Never a bathroom available either. Don’t go here.

We've had our company storage unit here for 6 months. As for storage, its a great place. However, after 6 months, our rent went up over $100.00 a month, over $1,000.00 increase for the year. If this happens in another 6 month, it will no longer be worth it. When you sign on for a unit, make sure you budget more than you are paying for. I will start looking for another place. We were hoping to stay here for a long time, but it will cost us too much because they keep raising the rent after 6 months. This can be used as a temporary storage/short term place if you need 3-6 months. After that, they will raise it and you'll be able to go anywhere you want because now they are in the same price range as everyone else. In the end, it's all about the money. Save yours!! They bring you in at a 50% less rate and then raise it once you become good paying customer. Good place, but like I said, it's all about money, anytime you pay thousands of dollars a year in storage, they should be great all around. This comment is based on the cost $$.

Sean was hustling on this Friday afternoon. Da Braddah can show & sell. I mentioned to Sean that the bathroom was out of toilet paper & messy when I attempted to use the facilities. Thankfully sink, soap & hand drier was available. Sean cleaned & stocked the bathroom right away. He was even appreciative to know about it. Cool vibes. Lots of movers going in & out. But parking, unloading & loading unit was easy. Flatbed carts are available for use during sales office hours; ID must be given in exchange for cart use. I did obtain a first floor orange box. Lucky me. The front door is locked when the two guys on duty busy with in/out processing units, but Sean was at the door right away when a lady was ready to inquire in sales office upon my returning the bathroom keys. It smelled & felt like he cleaned those keys, too. Only two guys working, Jung & Sean! Moving is not much fun, but today it was; because I’ve got the peace of mind that I’ve secured my household goods & gear out of my Pathfinder, which my brothers & I just picked up from Young Brothers. Mahalo Braddahs! & Thank goodness for the air conditioning throughout! Can cool off easy. Way to bring Aloha while moving. Thank you, Sean! E Kala Mai if I’m spelling names incorrect. My glasses was dirty & sis is tired! We left a little glitter on the flat bed, E Kala Mai for that, too. Mahalo & A Hui Ho.
Great Place. Open Loading zone, free flatbed to use provided by the place, mobile app to access storage easier. This is accompanied by great employees ready to help at any time. Only issues would be with time as it closes at 6pm and the lack of dollies / appliance dollies.

This review is long overdue! This is my second time storing with Public Storage, both at this location. Location is convenient and they have a good amount of parking (essential for the area). The manager Chris, I think that was his name, was very personable and informative when I first came by a year ago to facilitate a move. And the two ladies at the desk who have helped me since, Dora and Willa, have been kind, warm, helpful and very pleasant. I’ve stored with another local storage company before, but my experience with this Public Storage has been fast, easy, and efficient. The building feels clean and doesn’t have people loitering around the entrances, so it feels safer too. The one slight inconvenience is how early they close access to the building/units, I think it’s 6pm. But for how clean, secure, and well-maintained the building feels, and also the friendly familiar faces at the desk, I think it’s worth it. They do have an app; the app is not my favorite. It doesn’t allow you to see the units available or rent from scratch on it. Not sure if it’s a temporary glitch or just a glitch, but I’m also fine without using an app. Will definitely be storing with you guys if I need. The whole staff here are kind and helpful. Thank you!! :)

Watch out for price increases, after about 6 months the mainland company increased by rental by $100, a 36% increase. Make sure to shop around, the local crew is very helpful but they don't have any say in policies or prices.

Public storage in experience that I will never forget I ended up having to sell our childhood house for 36 years and had nowhere to put our belongings so I chose public storage across Mckinley on Kapi’olani and from then created a bond with the managers and workers over the period of Our belongings being in there it’s your responsibility to keep up on payments and me being irresponsible did not pay for my unit until minutes up to auction my belongings off every time I had to get information or walked into the office to ask for information the staff was overwhelmingly helpful kind and inviting to help you out as much as they can i’ve always had easy access to my unit and always felt safe being there although I don’t have a unit there now so now the staff can take a breath for calling me so much lol thank you so much public storage and thank you to the Manager willow if you mean read this and you have to put your belongings into a storage I highly suggest you choose public storage they have many locations around the island just give them a call and they’re willing to help you Aloha happy new year

Best experience I have had with Public Storage since so many changes due to pandemic So many managers were slow and unresponsive before and I noticed very unhappy customers but . with new staff, Jason is extremely helpful, fast, efficient and friendly overall easy to communicate with. Customer service was excellent and very responsive.

Public Storage is still ripping people off every single day. Before renting out that unit for $1 for the first month, make sure you read the fine print. Public Storage can and will jack your rental fee $100+ anytime they feel like it. They did mine. They take advantage of current renters because they know it is a hassle for you to move again. And because of this fact, you are what the industry calls a “sticky” customer. Again, Public Storage jacked my price again by another $100. Storage facilities should be laws established to regulate them similar to the Landlord / Tenant code used for home rentals. Because ideally they are posing as to be property management company.
Storage unit was clean, customer service was good shrue was very kind, the pricing structure was not idea but it served its purpose for my move.

Called the 800 number to inquire about a $1 promo for first time renters. Was transferred 3 times and spoke with 4 reps and nothing accomplished. So just contacted local storage facility in my area and the friendly and helpful staff solved my issue and I got my $1 promo for a 10x10 storage unit. I had a choice between this storage facility and another company much closer to home. I chose public storage based on their cleanliness of the facility, temperature control, durability of the storage unit, easy access, and especially size for a much better price. I had the pleasure to also have Willa as my rep to help me get signed on and setup. Overall great experience!

Dora was very patience and kind and helpful. She took the time to work with me and help me secure a unit .I was afraid I might not get a unit and she said to rent today because she only have one unit available on this size . also I was stressed because I didn't have enough and she told me to pay for the minimum payment and pay the rest on June 1st. I recommend Dora because a person like her is needed for someone like me who was very stressed. Thank you for all your help Dora .

Had to edit this post to give more details — trifecta dream team: Blair, Dora and Willa at Public Storage on Kapiolani are freaking awesome - all 3 worked to get me transferred from a 5x10 to a 10x10 - all were super nice, no attitude, so friendly ❤️❤️ It was so stressful to move between floors ❤️ - Blair made time to show me the different dimensions like a 10 x 7.5 - he could’ve easily placed me in a storage unit far away from the elevator but I’m so glad he was able to find one really close to an elevator for easy loading and unloading ease. Phew!!! All settled now!!!

We love using public storage! On our arrival to the island, we stored our stuff here and had a great experience. Now years later when we are sadly leaving Hawaii, we came back to public storage to store things as we are departing. Today, we were helped by Blair and he was such a great help. Additionally, Dora helped and both of their demeanors and knowledge led us to have a great experience. Definitely recommend public storage!

I needed to rent out a storage unit for my business in Kaakako. I called and Willa gave me all the information I needed. I came down and Willa gave me a full tour. They have a loading zone which you can park a 20ft container to offload. Thank you Willa for accommodating everything for us!

Realizing at 6:05 p.m. that it was the last day of the month, I pulled into the parking lot at Public Storage. Although they close at 6 p.m. Willa was super kind and allowed me to go in and empty the few things out of my storage locker so I wouldn't have to pay for another month. She absolutely went above and beyond and I am so grateful! We have two lockers at Public Storage, and I will continue to be a loyal customer. More than anything, I appreciate their excellent customer service.
At a self storage you don’t really interact with the staff that much unless you have questions or issues but every time I’ve gone in for assistance, Blair was a big help. He was very friendly, had a good attitude, and was very understanding. He never seemed stressed out, even though he was by himself and there was a big rush of customers before and while he was helping me. MAHALO BLAIR!
All self storage places are the same right? Not exactly. Of course you want a clean, well maintained and properly secured unit right? Check, check and check. But what sets Public Storage on Kapiolani apart from everyone else is service. From the moment I stepped in, through rental and beyond, Willa (and Keanu too) has been nothing but wonderful. She helped me get the right unit to make it easier for our movers to get our belongings in. She showed empathy and compassion when she learned that we had got embroiled in the move from h@!! with our previous mover (got so bad he was in the news). And she went the extra mile when we got caught up and delayed to help us out. Need a place to not just keep stuff, but belongings that mean something to you? Then no need to search any further, go see my girl Willa at the Public Storage on Kapiolani in town and she'll hook you up. Much Mahalos for a smooth rental and move!

Blair was super helpful as well as Wila. I came into their storage 10 mins before they closed. Blair accomodate me with no rushing. He even accompanied me to my storage coz i was kinda confused. Kudos to Blair for going above and beyond customer expectations
