About Pooler

Pooler is a mid-size city in Georgia's Chatham County, only eight miles away from the larger city of Savannah. Until recently, Pooler was a very small town of just a few thousand people. However, it began growing rapidly in the 1980s, with the population tripling between 2000 and 2010.

The History of Pooler

The city of Pooler was first established in 1838, with the arrival of a railroad station. The small community that was established around the station was named for Robert William Pooler, an employee of the railroad company. During the Civil War, it served as an important railway stop, named Pooler's Station. As the last stop before Savannah, it was a critical point on the Central of Georgia Railway. Union soldiers led by General Sherman often met in Pooler, and the small town was the site of important war negotiations.

After the war, Pooler remained fairly quiet until the arrival of Ben Rothwell. Rothwell purchased a large chunk of land in the area, giving it away to anyone who agreed to build a permanent home on their lot. In 1907, Pooler was officially incorporated as a city.

Another perk of living in Pooler is the coastal Georgia weather, with mild winters and warm summers.

Tourism, industry and shipping are all important aspects of the area's economy. The unemployment rate in Pooler is slightly higher than the state average, but job growth is positive. It's become the commercial hub of west Chatham County, drawing several large businesses including JCB, a major construction equipment manufacturer. There are also many retail jobs available at The Shops at Godley Station, a relatively new shopping center in Pooler.
