Kayaks and Canoes: Storage Tips for Off-Season
Oct 7, 2025 / Public Storage
Kayaking and canoeing are great ways to enjoy the water, but these boats can take up a lot of space when the season ends. Instead of tripping over a kayak in the garage or leaving it exposed in the backyard, consider moving it into a storage unit for the off-season. With the right prep, you can keep your kayak or canoe in top condition until it’s time to paddle again.
Clean and Dry Thoroughly
Before storage, rinse your boat with fresh water to remove dirt, sand, or salt. Use mild soap for stubborn grime, then let the kayak or canoe dry completely. Any leftover moisture can lead to mold or mildew.
Remove Accessories
Take off paddles, life jackets, seats, or fishing attachments. Store them in a labeled bin so nothing gets misplaced. This also reduces stress on straps or clips that hold gear in place.
Protect the Hull
Wrap the hull with moving blankets or a protective cover to prevent scratches. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of the boat, as this can cause warping over time.
Store Upright or on Its Side
The best way to store a kayak or canoe is standing upright or resting on its side. This reduces pressure points and helps the boat keep its shape. If you’re storing multiple boats, separate them with padding to avoid dents or cracks.
Use the Right Storage Unit
A 10×10 unit often works well for storing kayaks and canoes, along with paddles and gear. For longer canoes or multiple boats, a 10×15 unit may provide extra space.
The Bottom Line
Proper storage helps protect your kayak or canoe so it’s ready for the water next season. By cleaning, covering, and storing your boat in the right position, you can extend its lifespan and keep it adventure-ready year after year.
(Public Storage rental agreements prohibit storing property with a total value over $5,000 per unit.)
