How to Winterize a Jet-Ski for Storage
Oct 1, 2025 / Public Storage
Jet-skis are built for sun, surf, and speed, but even the wildest watercraft needs a good long nap when summer winds down. Before you say goodbye for the season, winterizing your jet ski properly is the key to making sure it’s ready to go when the warm weather rolls back around.
Let’s walk through how to pack away your jet-ski the right way.
Clean It Top to Bottom
Spray it down with fresh water to remove any sand, salt, or algae. Then, give it a proper scrub and dry it thoroughly. Moisture is not your friend in storage—it attracts mold and corrosion.
Drain the Water
Tilt the jet-ski to let excess water drain out of the exhaust system. Then, run the engine for about 30 seconds (someplace ventilated and not in your storage unit, and out of water with a flush kit or as recommended by your manufacturer) to clear any leftover water from inside.
Flush the Cooling System
Use a garden hose and the proper flush connector to rinse out the cooling system. This step clears out salt, debris, and anything else that could cause trouble later.
Stabilize the Fuel
Add fuel stabilizer to a full tank of gas and run the engine for a minute to circulate it. This helps prevent build-up in the fuel lines while it’s sitting still.
Fog the Engine
Use fogging oil (check your owner’s manual for instructions) to coat the inside of the engine and protect it from corrosion during storage.
Remove the Battery
Disconnect the battery, wipe it down, and store it in a cool, dry place. (Not in your storage unit.) If possible, keep it on a trickle charger so it’s fresh for next season.
Cover It Up
A snug-fitting cover will keep dust, pests, and grime away. Bonus points if you can elevate the jet-ski off the ground using a trailer or blocks.
Storing a Jet-Ski in a Storage Unit
Once your jet-ski is winterized, it’s time to think about where and how to stash it. If you’re using a storage unit, here are a few extra tips:
Choose the right size: A 10×15 or 10×20 unit usually fits a jet-ski and trailer comfortably. Always measure your jet-ski (and the trailer!) to be sure.
- Elevate it off the ground: If it’s not stored on a trailer, use blocks or a stand to lift it slightly off the floor. This helps prevent flat spots on the hull and avoids moisture contact from the floor.
- Leave the cover on: A breathable, fitted cover keeps out dust while preventing moisture buildup.
- Store gear separately: Don’t pack life jackets, gloves, or ropes inside the jet ski. Pack them away in a clean, dry bin next to it.
- No fuel leaks: Check for drips or damp spots under the fuel tank or engine before leaving it in storage. Add a drip pan or absorbent mat just in case.
Stashing your jet-ski away for the winter doesn’t have to be a hassle. A little prep now means you can hit the water faster later.
(Public Storage rental agreements prohibit storing property with a total value over $5,000 per unit.)
