Storing Patio Furniture in the Off-Season

Sep 18, 2025 / Public Storage

With a little prep, your outdoor setup will be fresh and ready for next season. The TL;DR: make sure to clean, disassemble, and cover patio furniture before placing it in a dry storage unit.

Start with a Clean Slate

Outdoor furniture collects dust, pollen, and summer grime. Before storing:

  • Wash metal and plastic pieces with warm, soapy water
  • Wipe down wood with a damp cloth and gentle cleaner
  • Scrub cushions and let them dry completely

Drying is critical, moisture left behind can cause mold or mildew.

Disassemble and Pack Smart

Breaking down furniture saves space. Remove table legs, stack chairs, and fold umbrellas. Keep screws and bolts in labeled bags and tape them to their matching furniture. Cushions should go into breathable storage bags or bins to keep them clean and organized.

Add an Extra Layer of Protection

Covers aren’t just for outdoor storage. Even inside a unit, slip furniture covers over tables and chairs to block dust. Store cushions in lidded bins or fabric bags to help prevent pests from getting in.

Make the Most of Unit Space

A 5×10 storage unit typically fits a standard patio set, including a table, chairs, umbrella, and bins of cushions. Maximize space by stacking chairs, sliding tabletops upright against a wall, and using shelving for smaller items. Always stack heavier pieces on the bottom and lighter ones on top.

Seasonal Decor and Extras

Don’t forget extras like string lights, outdoor rugs, or fire pit tools. Pack them in labeled bins so they’re easy to pull out when warm weather returns.

By cleaning, disassembling, and protecting your patio furniture, you’ll extend its lifespan and save yourself from headaches next season. When spring rolls around, your patio will be ready for lounging—not scrubbing.
