About Cordova

Located in Tennessee's Shelby County, Cordova is a suburb of Memphis and was named for Cordova, Spain. It's considered part of Memphis proper, and while the boundaries of this small community are not clearly defined, many small communities in the area are often attributed to Cordova.

The History of Cordova

Native Americans first settled the Memphis area, but the city was not officially founded until 1819 after French settlers arrived. An epidemic of yellow fever and the chaos of the Civil War stunted the community's development soon after it incorporated, but it rebounded quickly thanks to its close proximity to the Mississippi River.

Cordova, which is often linked to adjacent Appling, Tennessee, shares Memphis' rich history, which includes music legends like Elvis Presley and the tragic assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

Living in Cordova

Cordova has attracted attention for its pleasant weather, high graduation rates and convenient location. There are also plenty of amenities, including supermarkets, public transportation stops and fitness centers, within walking or driving distance of most residential areas of the city.

Residents of Cordova also enjoy close proximity to Memphis' famous barbecue joints, its abundance of blues clubs and a variety of outdoor spaces. This diverse community offers plenty of other attractions, from shopping and concert venues to restaurants and theme parks. The Colonial Golf Club, a private golf club in the area, drew attention to the community when it hosted the 1977 Memphis Open.

Cordova Schools

The Shelby County Schools system manages most of the schools in Cordova. In addition to its traditional elementary, middle and high schools, the district also oversees several specialty schools. Cordova and the surrounding area also offer many private schools, including faith-based, Montessori and parochial campuses.
