Self Storage FAQs
Self-storage prices vary by location, unit size, features, and availability. Smaller units typically cost less than larger ones, and indoor and climate-controlled units may be priced differently than standard units. Public Storage offers month-to-month rentals, so you only pay for the time you need.
Specials vary by location and unit type, so checking current rates and promotions in your area is the best way to find the most up-to-date offers.
Start by taking inventory of what you plan to store and how often you'll need to access it. A small 5x5 unit often fits boxes or small household items, while medium sizes like 10x10 work well for multiple rooms' worth of belongings. Larger units, such as 10x20 or 10x30, are designed for bigger items or business needs.
Indoor Storage Units: Located inside a building with hallway access.
Outdoor Drive-Up Units: Ground-level units you can drive up to for quick loading and unloading.
Climate-Controlled Units: Designed to help maintain more consistent temperature and humidity levels. Availability varies by location.
Vehicle Storage: Options may include parking spaces or enclosed units for cars or small trailers.
RV or Boat Storage: Typically offered as open or covered parking spaces at select locations.
Business Storage: Units suited for storing inventory, equipment, or supplies without the cost of commercial property.

Climate-controlled storage helps maintain more consistent temperature and humidity levels inside the unit. It's commonly used for items like books, fabrics, electronics, or other belongings that can react to extreme heat, cold, or humidity. Climate-controlled storage is available at many—but not all—locations, so availability depends on the facility.
Drive-up access refers to a ground-level storage unit that you can pull your vehicle right up to. This makes loading and unloading quicker because you don't need to use hallways, elevators, or stairs. It's often chosen for storing larger items or boxes you'll want to move in and out easily.
Some storage facilities offer 24/7 access as an added feature, while others provide extended access hours. Availability varies by property, so it's best to check your location's access hours when renting a unit.
Common security features include:
• Gated access with individualized entry codes
• Bright lighting throughout the property
• Onsite staff during office hours
• Video surveillance
• Well-maintained fencing and facility grounds
• Storage unit locks available for purchase
Features can vary widely by location, so reviewing your facility's offerings is recommended.

Convenience depends on your needs, but many renters prefer:
• Drive-up units for fast loading

• 24/7 access where available
• Month-to-month rentals
• Locations near home, work, or major roads

Rudest employee ever! I’m a disabled veteran and she’s parked in the handicapped spot! Good thing she has all her rhinestones on her car. If you’re a veteran or just handicapped don’t use this place!
Before public storage purchased this place, I intentionally came here just to get away from these corporate owned public storage facilities. It was a smaller privately owned facility with great service and very few issues that the friendly staff could not resolve.
Now get old public storage came in and snagged it up. It’s all about making money so I get it. But man, I sure wish you could offer a service that made people want to stay. I’ve used the restroom at least three different times where there was no paper towels, and no toilet paper.
The units used to be a nice cool temperature and now they maintain it at around 80 to 85° according to the tenant here. She says that it’s managed by corporate. And they say that 85° is still considered climate controlled.
I’ve also experienced discrepancies such as storage boxes being a lower price if purchased in quantity. So I purchased them and they only rang up the full price. I tried to ask how many I needed to buy to get the lower price that it advertised was never given a number.
So now I have to leave and go to Lowe’s to buy boxes.
I now need another unit and so I’m searching for a new place where I can move all my stuff to and add the new unit. I guess I’ll have to go out to pack at storage in summerville and just make the extra drive.
Just moved in to a parking space for my boat. Manny Smalls was extremely helpful in assisting me with swapping spaces after I had mistakenly booked a spot that was too small. He was very professional and courteous and made the extra paperwork as seamless as possible.
I stopped in today to see the spaces at this location and the young lady in the office was very nice about it. She showed me about five different size spaces.
And had no problem with showing them to me, I've been other places. And they are very rude.
Overall, I will be renting here in november
This place was very clean.Office smelled amazing, ivory was very pleasant and understanding
Young lady in the office is amazing. She helped with all my needs got me. The perfect size storage space
I just wanted to show my appreciation
Great location very convenient
Once was a decent place when privately owned. Now that Public Space owns it they cranked up the temps to 78 -82 for air-conditioned units. They have created conditions that is spread mold all across my unit and contents!
Great customer service.
I had storage space for a few years with the previous Pack Rat Self Storage owned property which was just shifted to Public Storage with no notice until I received a call on a Sunday with out an answer from the multiple call backs that Public Storage, the new management and ownership, locked me out because my autopay was cancelled due to the new ownership. They had no agreement and legal right to lock me out regardless since I was not aware or had a preexisting contract with Public Storage. I made the payment which took a unsuccessful chat that was disconnected without assistance and a call that finally got me to a person to pay my bill. The website would not allow me access to pay my account. I then created an account and then received the contract to sign.
This is the worst customer service I have seen with any storage company before and I am very disappointed with the lack of successful comms pre lock out when I did not have an account with Public Storage and therefore believed the two texts last week as spam which happens everyday. If I had been out of the country, I may have lost all of my stuff without a legal contract with the new ownership. I am always on time unless there is an issue with their system historically, but had great comms with the previous company. Now, the property manager will not answer the phone on a business day. Please make sure you communicate and create a n account if you are an existing client or avoid this place all together if considering a new account.
STAY AWAY from this location. When Public bought my storage unit it turned off my gate codes. No one was reachable. I finally connected with a person on site and they told me sign the lease and it’ll work. I also asked if there would be someone on site the next week because I was moving out of the state and they also said yes. The code did not work and no one was on-site at noon on a weekday. I had asked friends to come help and we were stuck at the gate.
When the manager finally showed up she gave me attitude and came in a car reeking of pot. This was a nightmare experience and I’ll never use Public storage again in my life and will recommend no one else does either.
I had a unit for 2 years. The rate stayed the same and my stuff stayed clean and dry.
The staff was very pleasant and everything was handled very professional.
I often report on places that are really bad, but Pack Rat was the opposite.
I have been all over the US and have encountered everything you can think of.
This storage place not only had very clean facilities, it had very personable and accommodating staff. Especially Sandy.
And the price was low and locked in (no pun intended.)
Storage facilities are everywhere.
Why not choose the one that isn't going to disappoint you?
Thats Pack Rat.
Great storage unit facility! Clean, reasonably priced and Sharon and Sandra are always a delight when making a payment in person!
At Pack Rat the prices are unbelievable & the storage units are clean/secure. Needed a storage unit in a hurry & it was super easy to get one online. I'm happy with Pack Rat👍🏾
Ms. Sharon Lindsey was so helpful and understanding!!
