Syosset is a mid-size hamlet on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. It's part of the town of Oyster Bay, and its neighboring communities include Laurel Hollow, Hicksville and Woodbury. Just over 30 miles from Manhattan, Syosset is far enough away to be a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of the big city but still near enough to allow easy access to big-city amenities.

The History of Syosset

Syosset is a fairly young city in the context of the Northeast, with a history that didn't truly start until the 20th century. Farmers were drawn to the area because of the fertile soil, and many people set up lavish country homes so they could enjoy the surrounding landscape and carve out a sizable chunk of U.S. real estate.

The community remained small and secluded through the middle of the 1900s. Only a few businesses dotted the community; every other inch of land was devoted either to crops or to large family spreads. Over the past 60 years, however, the community has blossomed into a thriving suburb.
