The History of Edison

The township was first settled in the late 17th century. One of its earliest developments was New Jersey's first public road, Old Post Road, which has provided residents with a convenient way home for hundreds of years. In the late 19th century, the establishment of inventor Thomas Edison's laboratory brought national renown to the township and prompted it to change its name to Edison.

Jobs in Edison

Numerous large businesses drive the economy in Edison Township and the surrounding Middlesex County area. The county's largest employers are health care providers Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Novo Nordisk and J.F.K. Medical Center. Grocery retailer Wakefern Food Corp. and pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb also provide thousands of jobs in Middlesex County.

There are many manufacturing facilities in Edison, acting as a major part of the local economy. Edison Assembly and Frigidaire both maintain major operations in the area, which have created a large job market for those with experience in the manufacturing industry. There are also many companies with a significant corporate presence in Edison, like Majesco Entertainment, Colavita and Zylog Systems. FedEx and UPS have major regional hubs in the township, serving as another source of local jobs.

Edison Schools

Students who live in Edison enroll at one of the Edison Township Public Schools. High school students can also apply for admission into the Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies. This high school campus provides an engineering-based education, admitting students based on academic merit.
