About Ellisville
Ellisville is a small city located just 20 miles west of St. Louis, providing easy access to the big city via a network of interstates and public transit. The city offers diverse neighborhoods, numerous green spaces, and plenty of shopping and dining.
The History of Ellisville
In the 1830s, the land where Ellisville now sits was settled by Captain James Harvey Ferris from Kentucky. His estate was called Ellis House and was eventually sold to Vespasian Ellis, a St. Louis editor. When he became the U.S. consul to Venezuela, Ellis sold the home to William. A. Hereford. In its first several years of existence, the estate had already passed hands several times. Once Hereford took over, however, he began to develop it into a thriving community.
He named the area Ellisville after a post office in his hometown of Ellisville, Virginia. Hereford opened a post office, later selling portions of land to other businessmen. Horses and orchards were developed, and the area's large farm was divided into smaller lots for resale and development. In the 1930s, Ellisville was incorporated as a village in order to establish a public school district. In 1957, local voters approved a motion to incorporate it as a city.
