About Blaine

Blaine is a midsize city in eastern Minnesota, one of the many thriving suburbs of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The city is fairly close to both of the Twin Cities, located about 13 miles from Minneapolis and 20 miles from St. Paul. Because of its convenient location, Blaine has become an increasingly popular home base for big city commuters.

The History of Blaine

Until the late 1870s, the land where Blaine now sits was considered part of the city of Anoka. Settlement in the area that would eventually evolve into Blaine began in the mid-1800s. Because the area was unsuitable for farming, the early townspeople relied primarily on hunting. After World War II, Blaine saw a population boom, blossoming from 1,694 residents in 1950 to 20,640 by 1970. Its convenient access to Minneapolis and St. Paul made it a prime destination for suburban families looking to avoid the bustle of city life while staying within reach of metropolitan amenities.

Living in Blaine

Just minutes from Minneapolis and St. Paul, Blaine is a popular destination for retirees and families alike who want a cozy, suburban home outside the city. The area is packed with convenient shopping and dining areas. Blaine hosts both large chain establishments and local businesses, providing plenty of big-box amenities while still maintaining local charm.

Though Blaine is primarily a residential area, it does draw visitors to its National Sports Center Olympic Training facility, which hosts hockey, soccer and track and field events year-round. Golfers are drawn to the area as well, thanks to the Victory Links Golf Course, the only public golf course in Minnesota designed for the PGA tour.

The greater Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington metropolitan area ranked first on the "Best Places" list of America's Most Playful Cities, as well as ranking among the Best U.S. Cities for Seniors in 2011.

Blaine Schools

Blaine schools belong to Centennial Public School District. The city is also home to a public charter school (Paladin Career and Technical High School), as well as a few private schools.

If you're planning to pursue a college degree in Blaine, you can attend Rasmussen College, which offers two- and four-year degrees in a variety of fields.
