About Sellersburg
The town of Sellersburg is a small community in Indiana’s Silver Creek Township, tucked in the state’s southeastern corner. Its proximity to the Indiana-Kentucky border puts it less than 15 minutes from Louisville, a large city with extensive amenities, including shopping, dining and entertainment. The local population is made up largely of a mix of young families, singles and retirees, many of which were drawn to the area’s friendly, small-town atmosphere.
The History of Sellersburg
Sellersburg was originally founded in 1846 by Moses Sellers, who shared his last name with the town. He was responsible for laying out the town and was the first storeowner in the community. Sellers created a somewhat unusual layout, with no right angles to be found on any of the town’s lots.
The town was officially incorporated in 1890, many years after the first post office opened in 1854. Before incorporation, the town’s name was Sellersburgh, and the “h” was dropped for unknown reasons.
