The History of El Segundo

El Segundo's roots date back thousands of years. The first settlers in the area were the Tongva and Chumash Native American tribes. Later, the land that's now El Segundo was adopted as part of the Rancho Sausal Redondo, eventually purchased by a Scottish baronet, Sir Robert Burnett. The land continued to change hands several times over, slowly developing as a center for agriculture.

El Segundo began to develop as an industrial powerhouse with the construction of its first refinery in the early 20th century. By 1917, the city earned its official incorporation and continued to evolve. The arrival of the railroad and the development of adjacent Los Angeles International Airport spurred additional growth in El Segundo throughout the 20th century.
