Campbell is a small city in Santa Clara County covering just over six square miles. Even though it's counted as part of Silicon Valley and Greater San Francisco, Campbell is not dominated by high-tech companies as are many other cities in the area.

The city offers quaint attractions with small-town appeal, such as the weekly farmers market, casting ponds along Los Gatos Creek Trail and the Heritage Theater, originally constructed in 1938. Downtown Campbell covers five blocks and offers boutique shopping, art galleries, antique stores and local restaurants. One of Campbell's most recognizable symbols is its iconic 1920's water tower, which is easily visible from downtown.

The History of Campbell

The area now known as Campbell was first settled by Benjamin Campbell in 1851. For decades, this was a small farming community with three canneries as the town's biggest businesses. In 1878, Benjamin Campbell sold the land to a railroad company, making just $5 an acre. Within a few years, the city's first subdivision had been established, and growth continued. Campbell was officially founded in 1887, finally earning incorporation in 1952.

Living in Campbell

Campbell's prime location makes it worth the high cost of living to many people. Within easy driving distance of Silicon Valley, Mineta International Airport, downtown San Jose and Santa Cruz beaches, Campbell provides convenient access to anything and everything.

The city is primarily residential, but there are a few major employers in the area. Barracuda Networks, Daley's Drywall and Taping, Whole Foods Market and Safeway provide hundreds of local jobs. It's very common for Campbell residents to commute outside the city for work, and you'll find a variety of jobs in surrounding Silicon Valley.

Local landmarks include the Ainsely House, a historic 1920s home that now operates as a museum. You can also find a redwood tree on one of the city's street corners. The tree has been standing for over 100 years and was originally planted by President Teddy Roosevelt. The city's community center provides a variety of classes and activities for both children and adults, and you can also take advantage of a number of local parks and green spaces.

Campbell's public schools are part of the Campbell Union School District and Campbell Union High School District.
